History of St. Ignatius
From 1954 to the present, St. Ignatius Parish continues to serve the needs of the Catholic community in the Arden Arcade area.

The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) founded Saint Ignatius Loyola Parish in Sacramento in 1954. Fr. Fred Cosgrove, S.J. was the founding pastor. The parish has been a ministry of the Society of Jesus ever since its founding, and today serves approximately 3,000 families in the greater Sacramento area.

Parish masses were first celebrated in “The Barn,” a rustic rented building on the corner of Watt Avenue and Arden Way. A temporary church that replaced “The Barn” was built shortly after the parish was established. The permanent church, as it stands today, was built and dedicated in 1959. The rectory was built in 1961, and the Parish Center, with gym and Garden Room, was built in 1989.

The new Parish Office and School building was built and opened in 2019.
The founders of Saint Ignatius Parish, both Jesuits and local community members alike, shared a deep commitment to education. St. Ignatius School opened alongside the parish in 1954. The Sisters of the Holy Names ran the school from its inception until 1975. The parish community, with the help of then-pastor Fr. Carroll Laubacher, established a Lay School Board to ensure the school would stay open after the Sisters left. The school has remained open, and the School Board still plays an active leadership role to this day. There are about 400 students enrolled at St. Ignatius School, and they are enjoying the new school building that opened in 2019.

The Jesuits have founded two additional schools in Sacramento. Jesuit High School opened in 1963, and Cristo Rey High School Sacramento, founded with the Sisters of Mercy, opened in 2006.

St. Ignatius Parish was rural in its beginnings. It was founded outside the city limits of Sacramento, and served a growing 1950s suburban population. Today, although the parish is still outside the city limits of Sacramento, the surroundings are much more urban than they were in the barn days. Through all of the changes to the Arden Arcade neighborhood, the city of Sacramento, and the state of California in the past seven decades, many of the founding parishioners and their families still worship at Saint Ignatius. Long-time residents and parishioners are joined by new residents and new parishioners who together take part in the dynamic growth of parish life at St. Ignatius.

This is a parish where all are welcome to find a spiritual home built on the long tradition of Jesuit spirituality.
