Gerry was born in San Francisco, CA on January 30, 1947, entered the Society on September 7, 1965 in Los Gatos, CA and was ordained May 21, 1977 in San Francisco at his home parish. He professed his final vows on August 27, 1990 in Santa Clara. He was 78 years old and a Jesuit for 60 years.

He served as a counselor at the Jesuit Institute for Family Life in Santa Clara (1987-1990) and as director of Manresa Retreat House, Azusa, CA (1990-1994). After a sabbatical year as parish administrator in West Yellowstone, MT, he moved to Sacramento in 1995 where he served as director and staff counselor at the Ignatian Institute for Family Life until 1998, then as minister and pastor at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish until 2010. He would then go on to serve as associate pastor, Most Holy Trinity Parish in San Jose (2011-2012); retreat and pastoral minister with the Sisters of Mercy in Auburn, CA and chaplain at Cristo Rey High School, Sacramento (2012-2016), before becoming director of the Newman Center at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
